Date: 2009
Place: Dominican Republic, La Vega
The Carnival in La Vega is said to be by far the best in the Dominican Republic and joyfully comes alive every weekend during the majority of January and all of February, going on for a fantastic party-filled 53 days.
The country's African heritage is reflected in the wildly colourful masks and costumes, the most typical being made of bright satin with dangling ribbons, bells and the compulsory devil horns. Many people carry around a balloon with which to hit innocent passers-by.
Merengue and salsa accompany all of the parades, and there are various concerts and art exhibitions especially organised around the event. Please check the festival website for the full programme of events.
