In 1941, a group of Jewish brothers organize the largest armed rescue of Jews during the Holocaust.
The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. The brothers turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential - a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others.
Though its awards-friendly December wide release date was nixed by a cost-cutting Paramount, Edward Zwick's buzzed-about war drama will receive a quiet, Oscar-qualifying run at the end of 2008. Does this mean Daniel Craig be the first 007 to score an Oscar nod before his License to Kill has been revoked? Delivering both of these films in the same year (Those James Bond stunts. That Belarussian accent!) should be enough to put him in the race. His toughest competition, however, may be co-stars Bell and Schreiber. As for the film, it should rack up some other noms, too (Best Picture buzz is old news already), and most importantly, bring to light a significant and often overlooked historical event.
